poems by Donald James Dolby
The Ballad of Sally and Alf
They've lived a long time now
Eighty years and more
They've lived through many changes
Even one World War.

They never bought a home to own
It never was a thought
Till Thatcher came to make them see
It was time they bought.

Much too late, it was for them
A council home was fine
Till Thatcher came and gave to them
Dissatisfaction on the line.

They live now and don't go out
Exist, not live, is better to show
Their life now 'cos without doubt
They're just waiting to go.
